Biography

HSNam

Native of South Korea, Hyun Sung Nam is a composer, pianist, and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. She started her musical career as a pianist when she had her Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 14. Hyun Sung’s music is often inspired by visual images, and aims to write music with a narrative. She earned degrees from Seoul National University (BM, Music Theory), New York University (MM,Music Technology), and is currently pursuing a MM in Composition at Brooklyn College, studying with Tania Leon and Doug Cohen. Hyun Sung’s compositional passion leans towards artistic collaborations involving other disciplines of art such as film, theater, installations, and dance. Her recent collaborations include “Miss Julie” with the Brooklyn College Theater Department, and an independent film titled, “A Sympathyte”. Also, she is currently in the collaborative process with Synthesis Dance Project in NYC, in which the work will be showcased in May 2014.

Along with composing and performing, Hyun Sung is a research scholar. Her empirical research on audio-visual perception and audio panning will be presented in the summer of 2014 at the Music & Screen Media Conference in Liverpool UK, and at the ICMPC2014 held this year in Seoul, Korea.
